(Lander, WY) – Lander Girls Swim and Dive Team hosted two meets against 4A schools this week. Not just any 4A schools, but Green River and Jackson, the schools with swimmers holding the fastest times in the state in almost every individual event going into the week.
How would Lander respond?
The Tigers used a strong team effort and excellent relay performances to best Green River on Friday 111 to 72 and Jackson on Saturday 98 to 85.
At these dual meets, points were awarded to the top five finishers in each individual event and the top three finishing relays. A maximum of four athletes from a team could score in an individual event. The team placing the most athletes in the top five would come out on top.
In addition, the team placing a second relay in the top three would score more points in that event even if the other team won the event. Only one relay event over the weekend had Lander’s second-fastest team not making the top-three cut.
First place finishers for Lander against Green River were Sara Kearns in the 50 Yard Freestyle, Brooklyn White in Diving, and Emma Jones in the 100 Yard Backstroke.
Others scoring in individual events for Lander on Friday were: Vayda Havens, Daegan Reinhardt, Chayse Denton, Katy Anderson, Cira Hampton, Shyrone AnesiShoyo, Lara Robertson, Liv Ooten, Brianna Else, Adlyn Even, Emily Plaisted, Ang Rudd, and Brinlee Heller.
Against Jackson on Saturday, first place finishers were Lara Robertson in the 200 Yard Freestyle, Daegan Reinhardt in the 200 Yard IM, Katy Anderson in the 500 Yard Freestyle, and Vayda Havens in the 100 Yard Breaststroke.
The following athletes also scored points in Saturday’s meet: Shyrone AnesiShoyo, Sara Kearns, Emily Plaisted, Chayse Denton, Cira Hampton, Brooklyn White, Adlyn Even, Lyla Rounds, Ang Rudd, and Emma Jones.
The coaches have worked hard with the athletes on technique thus far in the season. Even
small improvements can show up big in the results.
And the coaches, Erik DeClue, Greg Anderson, and Lyndsay Alcaraz, were celebrating just as much for the athlete successfully completing their first 50 free race, or doing a better flip turn in competition, or out-touching a competitor for that fifth-place finish as they were for those who won an event.
All this is what leads to a successful team, one where all the athletes realize their contributions are important. Head Coach DeClue was very pleased with the effort.
“Our kids swam really well and stepped up to some tough competition this week.”
Two additional athletes qualified for the state meet: Liv Ooten and Brooklyn White. This brings the total to 15 athletes Lander has qualified. Look for the number of green parkas to increase even further as the season continues.
Lander’s Swim and Dive team will next be in action in Jackson at their invitational, which will feature prelims on Friday and finals on Saturday.
