With the season at the halfway point last week, the Lady Wolverines of Riverton High School are at a crucial point of the season. Riverton is 6-18 on the season and 1-3 in the Class 4-A Southwest Quad with a 3-0 sweep of Jackson Hole.
Evanston leads the quad but split with Star Valley.
“To start the year, I knew it would take time for the team to gel because I only had one returning player,” Riverton head volleyball coach Justin Taylor said.
That returner is senior Alexis Taylor who leads the attack at the net for Riverton. Taylor recently reached the milestone of 1,000 kills in her career.
Riverton swept Kelly Walsh earlier this year and handled Rock Springs 3-1 so the improvement is coming.
“The team has worked hard to try different positions, work endlessly on their skills, and understand the flow of the game. There have been sets when we play, and it looks amazing, but then, are sets that show our inexperience,” Taylor said. “The players understand it is a growing process, and we have the ability to break through if we continue with focused work ethic.”
The Wolverines had three key conference games remaining in the season with two of those at home.
They host Evanston this Thursday at 5 pm, then travel to Jackson the following Thursday before ending the regular season on Saturday, October 25 against Star Valley.
Mixed in quad schedule is a West 4-A game at Green River this Tuesday.
“We still control what seed we can be in regionals. We have three of the remaining four games against teams in our quadrant,” Taylor said.
