(Shoshoni, WY) – Fremont County School District 24 in Shoshoni was honored as one of six districts in Wyoming as part of Wyoming Superintendent of Public Instruction Megan Degenfelder’s “Tour of Excellence.”
Degenfelder stopped in Shoshoni on Monday morning to present the award to the students of Shoshoni Middle School and High School. (The Shoshoni Elementary School was not in session, with the elementary staff working on a training day.)
Shoshoni is a leader in Career and Technical Education, with a dedicated staff willing to step outside their traditional roles within the district and instruct students in skills and trades not found in many other locations.
Shoshoni superintendent Bruce Thoren is the driving force behind Shoshoni’s innovative vocational curriculum, which utilizes traditional classroom teachers as well as district support staff who don’t usually instruct students.
Examples of this “stepping outside the box” in action are James Gardner, the Shoshoni transportation director, and Brandon Doyle, the district mechanic, who teach an automotive class. Jeff Gillett, the school resource officer, is the instructor for a very popular outdoor life class that offers fishing, fly tying, lure design, and real-life outdoor experiences.
Thoren praised his staff for their dedication and the students of Shoshoni for buying into the program.
Degenfelder congratulated the school on its success and noted the unique way that Shoshoni has expanded its vocational offerings within the confines of the district.
She posed with the 7-12 students behind the “Tour of Excellence” banner before taking an actual tour of the school and then meeting with faculty and staff.
