The Shane Shatto Memorial Wrestling Tournament was a big one last weekend with full brackets in every weight class and teams from Wyoming, Nebraska, and South Dakota in attendance.
Lander’s Ty McWilliams won the 113-pound weight class with the best match of the championship round in a thrilling 8-7 decision over Scottsbluff, Nebraska’s Oscar Brown. The 8-7 score was as tight as it gets short of overtime in high school wrestling.
Thunder Basin held off Casper Kelly Walsh for the team title, 213 to 206.
It was tough sledding for Fremont County wrestlers with just three placing in the event, including McWilliams.
Riverton had a pair of wrestlers reach the medal rounds, with Garrett Withrow finishing sixth at 106 pounds, and Dennis Thornock fifth at 150.
There were 27 teams at the annual meet in Douglas.
