(Riverton, WY) – Members of the Wind River Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution honored Fremont County Fire Protection District Battalion Chief, Tyler Downing, with the NSSAR Fire Safety Commendation Award.
The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution’s criteria for this award: “…is presented to an individual for accomplishments and/or outstanding contributions in an area of fire safety and service. The award is not limited to firefighters. It may be presented to recognize a variety of fire safety and service that has evolved into a highly technical and skilled profession with constant study, development, and involvement by numerous dedicated citizens with a single goal: protect human life and property by preventing injuries or casualties due to fire and chemicals.” NSSAR Official Handbook, Volume V: Individual Medals, Awards And Certificates, pg. 67.
District Chief at Fremont County Fire Protection District, Ron Wempen, wrote the following in the Public Service and Heroism Award nomination: “Mr. Downing went above and beyond the call of duty with the FCFPD, Battalion 10, Hudson. He has contributed countless hours of additional training as well as volunteering many weekends to instruct at the Firefighter Recruit Academy live fire trainings. He would take time off from work to present fire and life safety material to St. Margaret’s students in Riverton during Fire Prevention Week. Within the last couple of years Hudson Fire has had an influx of young new members and Tyler took time to mentor them through the academy and continuing education program. This significantly improved the learning environment within the department, enhancing the culture of family within the fire department.”
“Within the previous year, Mr. Downing has completed Fire Service Instructor 1 and Fire Investigation Technician. In true Tyler fashion, any time there is a chance to practice investigations, Tyler is right there and willing to dive in. He is the epitome of a Fire Fighter, a leader, and cares for his community. For these things we recommend him for the award.”
