(Midwest, WY) – Wyoming high school football aficionado, Patrick Schmiedt recently documented how a small town Wyoming high school football team changed football history forever, nearly 100 years ago.
According to the short film, in November 1925, Midwest, Wyoming’s Moses Field became the first place in the world to host a night-time football game.
Midwest began playing football in 1923, but quickly realized residents of the community were unable to attend day games because the majority of the town worked in a nearby oil field through daylight hours. It was ultimately those same oil field workers who assembled enough light so that Midwest supporters could cheer on their high school team.
“You know Friday night lights?” Schmiedt asks. “Yeah, that didn’t start in Texas or Ohio or Florida.”
