(Lander, WY) – It was a strange Shane Brock Memorial Track Meet this year. The event, once one of the largest in Wyoming, had just the host Lander Tigers from 3-A and the Class 4-A Rock Springs Tigers, along with squads from Wyoming Indian, Wind River, Dubois, Arapahoe Charter, St. Stephen’s, Fort Washakie, Encampment and Little Snake River.

Traditionally, teams compete in Thermopolis at the Bobcat Invite on Friday, then stay in Riverton or Lander and compete at the Shane Brock, but not this season.
The meet started in near-perfect condition, but ominous dark clouds loomed to the Northwest of Bill Bush Stadium. As the final heat of the girls’ 100-meter dash was about to take off, a lightning strike hit within 10 miles of the event and organizers cleared the field.
Many Lander athletes left and didn’t come back, leaving event workers without local athletes. When Rock Springs decided to load the bus and head home, so did a majority of the other teams in attendance.
The boys ran the 100-meter, but the boys’ discus and girls’ shot put only had the first flight complete.
Lander Hurdlers
The 300 meter hurdles, 200, 400, 800 and 3200 weren’t held. The 4×100 and 4×400 meter relays were cancelled as well.
Riverton not attending was a big difference this year as well. The Wolverines split their team on Friday with younger athletes competing at Thermopolis and the older ones running, jumping and throwing in Gillette.
It’s regional track this Friday and Saturday. Lander heads to Pinedale, Riverton to Star Valley and all the Class 1-A/2-A teams will be in Shoshoni.
