(Merna, WY) – The lightning-caused fire that’s been dubbed the “Horse Fire” was first noticed in the Big Piney Ranger District Friday, June 13th.
Crews quickly were deployed to Sublette County about 10 miles west of Merna, or 2 miles west of Prospect Peak. A release from the U.S. Forest Service Bridger-Teton National Forest posted as of 7:30 p.m. Friday night stated that the burned area was roughly 60 acres. About 15 hours later, that exploded to an estimated 400 acres.
According to a the Bridger-Teton release, “the fire continues to burn in heavy timber and slash. Smoke is visible from the McDougal Gap area. There are no closures associated with this fire.”
A type 3 incident management team and two type 1 helicopters have been ordered and are expected to arrive by this evening. A type 3 helicopter, 5 smoke jumpers, 3 fire engines and 3 different crews have been on scene since Friday.
