Dubois Chamber Music Brings the Brass to Town
Another first for music lovers in Dubois: A brass quintet will be arriving on Sunday, August 16 to perform for the Dubois public.
Central Wyoming Brass (CWB) played a few times at the Dubois school several decades ago, according to its leader, Kelly Dehnert. But although CWB has performed often elsewhere since it was formed in Riverton 43 years ago, he believes the public has never had a chance to hear them in Dubois.
The brass quintet is a “very unique kind of ensemble,” Dehnert says, particularly in this area. CWB may be the only such musical group in Wyoming, except for its counterpart at the University of Wyoming. The first one, the New York Brass Quintet, wasn’t founded until 1952, but these quintets can draw on a vast range of literature, from the Renaissance through the Baroque era right up to modern jazz.
CWB will be playing works spanning that spectrum on August 16, including an unusual piece written for brass quintet by Russian composer Victor Ewald in the 1800s, long before the brass quintet was a standard instrumentation.
Dehnert calls that his favorite work. “It’s the most extensive piece we play,” he adds, “a full, romantic piece – really enjoyable, challenging, and beautiful.”
Central Wyoming Brass has been loosely affiliated with Central Wyoming College since it was founded by the college’s first band director. The membership has changed periodically over the years, with the exception of French horn player Karla Forbis, who has been with CWB since the beginning. She is also principal horn in the Fremont Symphony Orchestra. Trumpet player Jeremy Cochran, another member, is currently Director of Bands at CWC.
The Dubois performance will take place at Dennison Lodge (adjacent to the Dubois Museum) at 3 PM on Sunday, August 16, with a reception to follow. Tickets cost $20 for general admission, $15 for those age 65 and older, and children under age 19 are welcome to attend for free. Tickets can be purchased at the Bank of Jackson Hole in Dubois, online at duboischambermusic.org, or at the door before the concert.
