(Shoshoni, WY) – Back in February, a bipartisan bill honoring the life and legacy of former Shoshoni Postmaster Dessie A. Bebout passed through the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, which aimed to honor Bebout by naming the local post office in Shoshoni after her.
The ceremony will take place next Wednesday, August 13, in the Shoshoni Schools commons area (404 Wrangler Way), at 10 AM. It is open to the public.
Shoshoni Mayor Joel Highsmith shared the following with additional details about Bebout and the ceremony.
In addition to being the Shoshoni Postmaster, Bebout was a WWII veteran and one of the first women in Wyoming to enlist in WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), the women’s branch of the United States Naval Reserve during World War II.
In addition to her career in the U.S. Postal Service, Bebout served as a Fremont County Election Judge, in the Shoshoni Chamber of Commerce, Shoshoni PTA, Wyoming Women’s Commission, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Women’s Auxiliary and on the Riverton Hospital Board among many other organizations.
She passed away at the age of 102.
