(Riverton, WY) – Girl Scouts and Girl Scout leaders, past and present, are invited to attend the Girl Scout Gate Dedication on Saturday, June 15, at the Riverton Museum, 700 East Park. The short ceremony will start at 10:00 AM with honored guest, NettaBell Girard, unveiling the gate. A reception will follow, and Girl Scout cookies and lemonade will be served. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy reminiscing. The museum will be open at a reduced rate of $3.00 per person.
The gate was made locally as a stage prop for Daisy’s Dream, affectionately named
after the founder, Juliette “Daisy” Lowe, and is a replica of the one at her birthplace.
The three-day event was held at CWC and drew 1,000 Girl Scouts to celebrate the 90th
anniversary of Girl Scouts of the USA in 2002.
For over 70 years, the Girl Scouts have been an energetic, educational community
service program for the girls of Fremont County. Girl Scout troops have continuously met in Riverton and Lander through those years. At various times, there have also been troops in Dubois, Crowheart, Pavillion, Ft. Washakie, Ethete, Arapahoe, St. Stephens,
Jeffrey City, Hudson, and Shoshoni.
Volunteers held weekly meetings during the school year. Summer camps were held in Dubois, the 4-H Camp above Lander, Ocean Lake, and numerous sites along the Wind River, Tough Creek, Wind River Canyon, and Shoshoni City Park. There were many themed events like the Father/Daughter Banquets, Sing-a-longs, Science Events, Holiday Events and Slumber Parties.
Rendezvous at South Pass was the destination of two groups of girls, one hiking from Jeffrey City and one hiking from Rock Springs. The GSUSA National Event Romance on the Wind brought girls from 38 states to the Wind River Country.
The Girl Scout Gate that brought Cache to Daisy’s Dream has now taken on a new life as a symbol of appreciation and gratitude to the devoted volunteers who gave their time, energy, and enthusiasm for a spirited and successful program for young women.
