(Lander, WY) — The Lander community is invited to an evening of remembrance, prayer, and reflection as we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the tragic death of former Lander resident and U.S. Senator Lester Hunt. This service will be held on Wednesday, September 18th, at 7:00 PM at Trinity Episcopal Church, located at 860 S 3rd St., Lander, WY.
Senator Lester Hunt died by suicide on June 19, 1954, after being bullied and extorted by Senator Joseph McCarthy and others for political gain. His death was a profound loss for Wyoming and continues to serve as a powerful reminder of the dangers of political divisiveness and polarization.
The event will feature Senator Cale Case and speakers from the Fremont County Suicide Prevention Taskforce, Wind River Pride, as well as other community members who will share their insights on the lessons from Senator Hunt’s life and death. These speakers will address the ongoing challenges of political polarization, the importance of mental health awareness, and the critical need for compassion and community in our society.
This gathering is an opportunity for the Lander community to come together in solidarity, to honor Senator Hunt’s legacy, and to listen to meaningful stories about the perils of division and the power of unity. The evening will include prayers, reflections, and resources aimed at fostering a more just, compassionate, and connected community.
