Willow Creek elementary 1st graders had the chance to write and put together their own book, titled ‘When I Grow Up’ this week.
Each 6 and 7-year-old student in Mrs. Meeks class were given the task of writing a quick summary of what they’d like to do for an occupation when they get older.
Instructor Jessalyn Meeks explained,
This is a class project that I started last year and the kids loved it so I want to continue doing this with my students every year. To be able to tell someone they have had a piece of their writing published is kind of a big deal! And these make great keepsakes!”
After the book was complete, the class held a party for parents and close family members, as well as other staff members at Willow Creek. Students took turns reading their page of the book to the audience while enjoying treats and signing each other’s copies of the book.
In “2019-fashion,” many of the students explained they wanted to be a YouTube star. “It was a popular choice,” said Mrs. Meeks. “I had to ask them to explain what exactly that was to me” she joked. There’s also some future police officers, teachers, bakers, and even ninjas in the book.
