“The rain falls on the just and the unjust,” from the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 45. It wasn’t a religious experience for Class 4-A golf teams across Wyoming last Friday, but it was a wet one.
Wyoming High School Activities Association officials dealt with weather conditions similar to those experienced every May at the state track meet in Casper last weekend in Evanston.
The state golf tournament was delayed until 1 p.m. on Friday with rain, lightning and high winds. The boys and girls were able to squeeze in the front nine at the Purple Sage Golf Course, but that was it for Friday.
On Saturday, conditions were much improved and a full 18 holes was played. The tournament will ever be open to speculation as Thunder Basin edged the Riverton Wolverines 457 to 459 to win the boys’ championship.
The winning score of 104 by Campbell County’s Jaxon Burr seems a little strange, but that’s for 27, not 36 holes. Riverton was paced by Shoshoni senior Cade Kisling, who shot 111, 37 on Friday and 74 on Saturday. He was tied with two other golfers.
Riverton sophomore Brody Taylor finished just out of All-State status with an 11th-place finish on a score of 115.
Thunder Basin placed three boys in the top 10 to win the state title.
Riverton did not have a girls’ team in competition.
