(Shoshoni, WY) – It took an extra four minutes, but Shoshoni prevailed over third-ranked Wyoming Indian at home Thursday evening 52-49 in overtime.
The Wranglers were led by 6-3 senior Quinton Clark who had a career high 27 points.
Wyoming Indian rolled in the early going, quickly building an 18-8 lead in the first period behind a pair of 3-point shots by Parlayne Ferris and six points on inside shots from Heeyeiniitou Monroe- Black.
“We came out and looked very slow and got off to a rough start,” Shoshoni head coach Taylor Dick said.” After that we started playing much better and, overall, felt like we were working very well together. We still have some things to hopefully clean up but we started to play at a much better pace and take care of the ball.”
Shoshoni reversed the score in the second period, while slowing down the game to a more patient, half-court style contest. Clark and Landon Kasper took the ball inside efficiently in the second quarter.
The Chiefs led 30-26 at the half.
Scoring slowed in the second half as Shoshoni handled Wyoming Indian’s pressure and took the ball inside.
Trailing 40-36 with just a second left in the third, Clark hit a fadeaway 3-pointer that cleared the net as the horn sounded, making it a one-point contest.
Both teams cranked down the defense in the final period of regulation. The Wranglers hit a pair of 3-pointers, one by Andrew Garcia and the other by Caden Kisling while the Chiefs hit a single long range shot by Ferris.
“Our defense finally stepped up and that’s what won us that game,” Dick said. “I’m super proud of how hard everyone played for each other last night.”
In the overtime, the Chiefs scored just once on a close range shot by Adriano Brown. Clark and Stetson St. Clair scored for Shoshoni.
As the clock ticked away, Kisling was fouled twice, hitting just one of four attempts from the line in the final seconds, but it was enough for the win.
“Everyone did put their heart out there when they played and that’s all a coach can ask for. So proud of them for rebounding from a really tough loss last weekend. You can either regroup or fold,” Dick said. “It looks like we are a group that wants to regroup. We just have to keep believing and putting in the work the right way.”
Clark led all scorers with 27. Monroe-Black had 15 and Ferris scored 14.
The Chiefs travel to Pavillion to play Wind River Friday evening while the Wranglers host Kemmerer.
