(Shoshoni, WY) – The Wranglers won their home opener over the visiting Southeast Goshen Cyclones 28-7 late Thursday afternoon at Bailey Field in Shoshoni.
The Wranglers scored via the big play twice, the first on a 51-yard run by junior quarterback Caden Kisling and the second on a sibling connection of senior Carson Kisling catching an 82-yard bomb from his younger brother.
Evening out the play was a pair of touchdowns from Carson Kisling to Oakley Hicks, the first a 21-yard out and the second a 12-yard curl route.
The Wranglers host Lingle-Ft. Laramie next Thursday at 6 pm in their final non-conference game of the season.
The first quarter looked like an old Keystone Cops comedy filmed on a football field. The two teams combined for four fumbles and a bad snap in an error-laden opening period. Shoshoni lost a pair of fumbles and Southeast lost two fumbles and a shotgun snap that sailed 20 yards behind the line of scrimmage.
Southeast didn’t move the ball well, but Shoshoni did.
The Wranglers consistently picked up first downs and made big plays off tackle on Carson Kisling and Brodie Shepard runs, but stalled or turned the ball over on downs repeatedly. Much of the first half was played between the 30-yard lines.
While the Wrangler offense sputtered, Shoshoni’s defense shined.
On the first play of the second quarter, Southeast quarterback Beaux Shimic attempted a wide flair pass to 6-3 receiver Chase Sauer directly in front of the Shoshoni bench. The ball glanced off his fingers. Carson Kisling was in tight coverage and did a tightrope walk, keeping his feet in bounds as he pulled in the interception.
Throughout the game, junior linebacker Carlos Marrufo played with reckless abandon. Resembling the “Tasmanian Devil” of Bugs Bunny fame on nearly every play, Murrufo was relentless, breaking through blocks, upending Southeast’s 6-3, 215-pound running back T.J. Moates and generally wreaking havoc.
Maruffo is one of the top defensive in all five divisions of Wyoming prep football.

Caden and Carson Kisling celebrated a Shoshoni touchdown in the end zone Thursday. Carson Kisling was brought down by 4 Southeastern players after making a catch over the middle. Tryston Truempler made play calls from the sideline Thursday in Shoshoni. Preston Hance made a sack as quarterback Beaux Shimic tried to escape. Malachi Litz and Carson Kisling brought down Chase Sauer of Southeastern for a loss. Quarterback Caden Kisling ran the ball out of the backfield. Senior defensive back Oakley Hicks celebrated an interception early in the third for Shoshoni.
