It is not unusual for cyclists to stop in Dubois while pedaling their way across Wyoming. But those who arrive with the Tour de Wyoming cycle group on Wednesday, July 16, can enjoy a unique kind of respite: A free classical music concert by performers from Jackson’s Grand Teton Music Festival.
“The Tour often features evening entertainment for the riders,” said Wyoming cellist Beth Vanderborgh, who serves on the Tour de Wyoming organizing committee. “We love to have local bands, songwriters, and artists showcase their talents. At the Tour’s stop in Dubois this July, for the first time in our history, we are featuring a classical chamber music concert.”
“We are so excited to partner with Dubois Chamber Music to present this string quartet concert with Grand Teton Festival musicians,” she went on. “It’s going to be a wonderful event! Usually, the Tour entertainment is for cyclists only, but this time, with our Dubois Chamber Music partners, we invite the community to attend!”
Thanks to the partnership, the evening concert is offered free of admission. It will take place at 7 PM at the Headwaters Center on the eastern edge of Dubois Town Park, at the end of Stalnaker Street.
Featuring a string quartet, the program sets off to a rousing start with a foot-stomping modern work called “Strum” by American composer Jessie Montgomery, who completed it in 2008 when she was only 24. Filled with “intriguing colors … and masterly allusions to rock, jazz, and folk music,” according to a review in a musical journal, it “deserves its status as a 21st-century classic.”
The concert also includes a work by Czech composer Antonin Dvorak and a medley of popular songs.
Taking a break from the Grand Teton Music Festival to perform in Dubois that evening are violinists Jorie Butler-Geyer and Louise Morrison, violist Chiara Kingsley Dieguez and cellist Judith Galecki.
Dubois Chamber Music will offer two further concerts in Dubois this year: A performance by the Ben Markley Jazz Trio on Sunday, August 17, at 3 PM, also at the Headwaters Center, and the return of musicians from Jackson Hole Chamber Music to the Dennison Lodge at 3 PM on Sunday, September 28.
