According to a new report from the United States Department of Justice, Wyoming’s prison population is growing rapidly.
The latest data tallied was from total numbers in 2017. In 2017, Wyoming recorded 429 people per 10,000 residents were incarcerated, for a rate of 4.2%.
The national rate according to the Casper Star-Tribune is 399 people her 10,000 residents.
The only states with a higher percentage were Utah at 4.3% and Idaho, the nation’s leader, at 5.1%.
Additionally, on the U.S. Department of Justice Report, there were about seven times more men than women in Wyoming prisons. State prisons nationwide had about 12 times more men than women.
From 2016-2017, 29 states saw the prison population decrease.
