Wyoming has a rich history with the Indigenous population, including the tribes on the Wind River Reservation. Now, Wyoming Humanities is making it easier for teachers across the state to ensure stories and knowledge can be shared with all students.
“One of the best ways to fulfill the Indian Education for All Act is to have Indigenous Knowledge Keepers visit Wyoming classrooms,” said Chloe Flagg, director of grants and programs for Wyoming Humanities. “This isn’t always feasible, especially because of the expense and time required to visit various communities in Wyoming.”
To address these challenges, Wyoming Humanities now offers funds for K-12 educators in the state who bring an Indigenous Knowledge Keeper into their school, classroom, or field trip. To do so requires the completion of simple application, and all requests for support should help fulfill Indian Education for All standards and requirements.
Wyoming Humanities will offer one-time compensation to support the inclusion of an Indigenous Knowledge Keeper in the classroom, including an honoraria of $350 for the presenter and depending on distance $200 in travel funds.
It is strongly suggested that interested educators apply at least six weeks prior to their program date.
Payment will be made directly to the presenter. Funding is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
