It’s called a West Regional with teams from Cowley to Kemmerer, but the opening round had a decidedly Fremont County look with the Wyoming Indian Chiefs and Lady Chiefs tangling with the Shoshoni Wranglers and Lady Blue in opening round action.
The Lady Chiefs rolled over Shoshoni 79-46 behind four girls in double-figure scoring. Paced by 15 points from freshman Paisley Blackburn, with a dozen each from Taya Dixey, Gerilyn Redman and Aislynn Gambler, Wyoming Indian blew open the game in the third period with a 27-point outburst.
Shoshoni was led by freshmen Addi Mason with 16 points and Natalie Gilbertson with 13.
The boys’ game was close for the opening 12 minutes, promising to possibly be a repeat of Shoshoni’s overtime win earlier in the season, but the Chiefs would have none of it.
Wyoming Indian rolled to a 13-point lead at the half behind a 28-point second period to put the game away.
Cordell Spoonhunter was recovering from a knee injury in the first meeting but tallied 15 points this time with a pair of treys. LaDanian Brown scored 14, and Heeyeiniitou Monroe-Black and Adriano Brown each scored 10.
Shoshoni was led by senior Quinton Clark who had an outstanding game, finishing with 21 points including seven-for-seven from the line.
Shoshoni continued in the consolation bracket Friday morning with both teams facing another Fremont County rival in the Wind River Cougars and Lady Cougars.
The Wyoming Indian teams both play Thermopolis in semi-final action. The boys play at 4:30 and the girls at 6 both at Riverton High School
