Motorists who use electric vehicles may need to pay a new yearly fee if a bill in the Wyoming Legislature is approved.
The Wyoming House of Representatives gave initial approval of the bill Wednesday, that would require plug-in electric cars to have a decal that costs $200 a year. Currently, a decal is required for electric vehicle owners, but only costs $50 a year.
Owners of hybrid vehicles would also need to get a sticker under the bill that would cost $100 a year.
Republic Rep. Landon Brown of Cheyenne announced his support for the bill, calling it a way to offset state fuel taxes not being paid by electric and hybrid vehicle owners. The Associated Press reports that Wyoming charges a 24 cent per gallon state tax on gasoline and diesel.
