A Wyoming man will very likely spend the rest of his life in prison after being accused of killing and abusing his ex-girlfriend’s two-year-old son.
John Barrett of Cheyenne was sentenced Friday to between 50 years and life in prison for second-degree murder and 20-25 years for child abuse. A judge said the sentences are to be served back-to-back.
The Wyoming Tribune Eagle is reporting that Barrett told a judge that he punched his then-girlfriend’s son in the abdomen while babysitting in May 2017. The child died the day after the punch.
Barrett’s attorney told the court that he did not intend to kill the 2-year-old.
Family members in court said the 2-year-old loved trains, arcade games, and loved his twin brother and older sister.
