(Statewide) – The Wyoming State Trails Program encourages snowmobile enthusiasts to prepare early for the upcoming winter season by purchasing their required user fee decals and reviewing key safety information before heading out on the trails.
Snow season arrives quickly across Wyoming, and riders are encouraged to purchase decals in advance to ensure compliance and avoid delays once the snow flies. Decals are available for purchase online, where users can choose to have their sticker mailed or pick it up in person at one of several authorized selling agent locations statewide.
Under legislation approved by the Wyoming Legislature during the 2025 session, snowmobile user fees have been updated to better support trail maintenance and operations. Wyoming law requires that all snowmobiles display a current Wyoming resident or nonresident user fee decal prominently on the outside of the machine. The updated fees are $50 for residents and $75 for nonresidents, available for purchase online or through several permit-selling agents throughout the state.
Additionally, all commercial snowmobiles operated in Wyoming must have a commercial permit, which is $150 and must be purchased through the State Trails Field Office in Lander.
Revenue from the decal program goes directly toward maintaining more than 2,000 miles of designated snowmobile trails throughout the state. These funds support grooming, signage, equipment maintenance, and trailhead facilities.
“The Wyoming State Trails Program takes great pride in maintaining one of the best snowmobile trail systems in the nation,” said Forrest Kamminga, the Wyoming State Trails Program manager. “This recent fee adjustment will help ensure we can continue providing safe, well-groomed trails for residents and visitors to enjoy for years to come.”
Riders can easily register their snowmobile and purchase the required user fee decal through the State Trails Program’s online registration system, launched in 2024. The online process combines registration and decal purchase in one step. Users can create a new account or log into their existing one – if it has been more than 90 days since the last password reset, a reset will be required before logging in. During registration, riders must provide the year, make, model, and VIN for each snowmobile. Once payment is complete, customers can choose to have the decal mailed to their home or pick it up at an authorized selling agent. A map of selling agent locations is available on the Wyoming State Trails website, and those who prefer to buy in person are encouraged to complete their online registration beforehand for faster service.
The Wyoming State Trails Program reminds riders to enjoy the season responsibly by following key safety and courtesy guidelines: know your route, weather, and terrain before heading out; dress appropriately for cold and changing conditions; obey on the ground signage and obtain maps of riding areas to ensure you avoid any on the ground closures that could have an impact on wilderness designations, critical wildlife winter range, and private property. Snowmobile user fee decals are valid from July 1 through June 30 each year. Trail grooming operations typically occur from mid-December through early April, depending on weather and snow conditions.
The Wyoming State Trails Program, part of the Wyoming Department of State Parks and Cultural Resources, manages more than 640 miles of off-road vehicle trails and over 2,000 miles of groomed snowmobile trails across the state. The program partners with land management agencies, local clubs, and volunteers to ensure Wyoming’s trail systems remain safe, sustainable, and enjoyable for all users.
