(Riverton, WY) – The volunteer-run 1838 Riverton Rendezvous historical site has been significantly vandalized for a second time in just two months.
The vandalism occurred on Monday, May 17th, and was luckily witnessed by a Rendezvous Association club member who happened to be on site looking for a misplaced phone.
The Association member immediately notified the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office and watched and waited until Officers arrived on scene.
Those responsible for the vandalism were 3 boys and 2 girls, all juveniles. Upon arrival, FCSO called parents to pick the juveniles up. Citations were issued, and they will have to appear before the judge, with charges pending.
Association President Kyle Lehto informed County 10 that the two damaged picnic tables will cost up to $1,000 each if they have to be replaced completely. He also hopes the juveniles will comprehend the severity of their actions, and either volunteer or be made to help with repairs as a part of their punishment.
The historical site, home to the annual Mountain Man Rendezvous Reenactments, is currently gearing up for it’s summer season of events. However, between the May 17th property destruction and the vandalism occurring back in April, there have definitely been some setbacks.
“It’s completely frustrating,” Lehto commented. “Now we have to spend time repairing things when we could have been focusing that time and energy into fixing the kitchen destroyed back in April, or other general upkeep. What is a volunteer’s time worth?”
The Association also issued the following reminder on their Facebook page for any and all future vandals:
“Just for future ears, if you are caught doing damage to our property, you will be prosecuted! We all work very hard at preserving our site! We take personal offense to having you tear it up! A huge thank you to the Sheriff’s department for their quick response!”
