Billboards were placed on US-26 west of Kinnear and WY-789 north of Campbell’s Corner in hopes of attracting travelers to Riverton for food, fuel, shopping or even spending the night.
Seeing the billboards to fruition, and even helping build them were Riverton residents Mike Martin and Joe Stanbury.
They spent several months brainstorming ways and seeking community input to get drivers to Riverton instead of following the shortest route provided by navigation apps like Google, Waze, etc…
Navigation apps use algorithms to provide users the fastest route from point A to point B. Drivers on US-26 and WY-789 are routed onto the Missouri Valley Road cutoff since it shaves some minutes and miles from their trip.
“It took a long time,” Martin shared about getting the billboards put up. “I think it will be good for Riverton though.” The restaurants featured on the billboards committed to a two-year agreement to advertise on the boards.
Joe and Mike also petitioned the highway department about lowering the speed limit on the cutoff from 70 mph to 55 mph. There hasn’t been an update on whether or not that is going to happen, Mike shared.
