(Fremont County, WY) – The National Weather Service in Riverton shared on Sunday morning that the Red Canyon South Pass Area (elevation 6,581 ft) clocked in an 89 mph wind gust between yesterday, October 11, and today, October 12. Mount Coffin wasn’t far behind at 84 mph.
Winds remain high on WY-28 South Pass roads Sunday afternoon, which are currently closed to light, high-profile vehicles “due to dangerous winds and extreme blowover risk,” as per WYDOT.
“Winds will diminish through the afternoon, becoming relatively light towards sunset,” the NWSR shared.
While not as windy, Togwotee Pass (US 26/287) received a decent amount of snow from Saturday into Sunday and still has snow on the ground as of this afternoon, according to WYDOT, which has also issued a black ice advisory for those roads.
