(Lander, WY) – Anyone in Lander, Fremont County, and who knows how many other parts of Wyoming can all agree on one thing; Margaret “Maggie” Appleby is one of the busiest, most community-minded residents that a town could hope for.
Often referred to as “The Hardest Working Woman In Lander,” Maggie is always involved in some type of project that betters the community, whether it’s helping organize the Lander Pioneer Days 4th of July Parade, volunteering time at the Methodist Church, or her involvement with the Lander Pioneer Museum.
Appleby’s community contributions were recognized at the December 10 Lander City Council meeting last night, where her birthday, December 17, 2024, was officially declared “Margaret Appleby Day.”
Council member Melinda Cox read the Mayoral Proclamation on behalf of Mayor Monte Richardson, which can be read in full below.
“This is a proclamation in recognition of Margaret Appleby. Whereas Margaret Appleby, a beloved member of our community, will celebrate her 90th birthday on December 17, 2024. And whereas Margaret has dedicated countless hours to volunteering, making significant contributions to the well-being of our city through her selfless service, unwavering commitment and inspiring spirit. And whereas her involvement in numerous community organizations, events and initiatives has enriched the lives of many, leaving a lasting impact on residents of all ages. And whereas Margaret’s kindness, generosity and dedication have set a remarkable example of what it means to give back to one’s community, embodying the values of compassion, leadership and civic responsibility. And whereas her legacy of volunteerism and service has made Lander a better place for all who live, work and visit here. Whereas the City of Lander wishes to express its deepest appreciation for Margaret Appleby’s decades of dedication and to celebrate her extraordinary contributions. Now, therefore, I, Melinda K. Cox, on behalf of Monte Richardson, Mayor of Lander, Wyoming, do hereby proclaim Tuesday, December 17, 2024, as Margaret Appleby Day, in honour of her 90th birthday.”
The whole thing was a surprise to Maggie, who had been told that the Mayor “needed her help reading a proclamation” at the Council meeting.
Always humble and a woman of few words when she is being recognized for all of her hard work, Maggie had this to say after the ceremony.
“It’s been a pleasure being born in Lander, Wyoming, and I hope it continues to be a pleasure! And I hope people keep doing good things, which is pretty hard today.”
The proclamation also concluded by encouraging folks to do some of those “good things” Maggie mentioned, especially if timed around “Margaret Appleby Day” on the 17th.
“I encourage all citizens to join in honoring her exceptional service to our community by performing an act of service in her honor.”
