(Lander, WY) – When Lander Valley High School senior Madalyn Nicely recently found out from fellow schoolmates who have disabilities that they didn’t feel comfortable going to the school dances, she immediately lived up to her last name and decided she wanted to do something about it.
“I have talked to a couple of special needs students in my school, and they have voiced that they don’t feel welcome in our school dances, or they feel judged wherever they go because they’re a little different from us,” Nicely shared with County 10. “I saw a post on Happening in Lander (a community forum page on Facebook) asking if there was any events like this, and everyone had said that there isn’t… so after reading that comment, I made it happen that same night!”
And make it happen she did. The “Night 2 Remember” dance is now scheduled for June 5 at the Lander Community Center, and will kick off at 6 PM. Nicely added that the event is free and “everyone is invited.”
“People can show their support by volunteering, sharing, or donating,” Nicely added. “I am looking for a ton more volunteers and more donations! No stranger to community involvement, Nicely is also the current president of the Lander Valley FFA chapter, and said she is “very active” in her dance studio. She plans to attend the University of Utah in the fall.
