Fremont County hit statewide news this week when Casper Mayor Charlie Powell announced his support for Aethon Energy’s proposed oilfield wastewater discharge permit. The requested permit would allow the daily discharge of 8.27 million gallons of wastewater from the Moneta Divide Gas Field into Alkali and Badwater Creeks; both creeks flow into Boysen Reservoir.
Oil City News reported, Mayor Powell was approved by the Casper City Council on November 19th to attend an upcoming meeting in Cheyenne to support the proposed permit.

The meeting Mayor Powell plans to attend in Cheyenne is unclear. Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality Public Information Officer Keith Guille told County 10 today there is no meeting about this permit scheduled.
“We are still working on reviewing all the public comments submitted,” Guille said. They received over 500 written comments, not including the verbal comments shared during the public meetings held in Riverton and Thermopolis earlier this year.
DEQ plans to release a response addressing all of the comments and make a decision about the permit following that release, Guille explained. As of right now, nothing else is scheduled.
