(Afton, WY) – After falling to Jackson at home Thursday, Dietrik Becker’s Wolverine soccer team responded with convincing win Saturday.
Riverton picked up their third win of the season, beating Star Valley on the road 3-0. Senior goalkeeper Ryan Cox helped the Wolverines also notch their third shutout of the season.
Becker emphasized Ryan’s great game, specifically pointing to a second-half penalty kick save that he said was, “crucial to keep our momentum going.” The first-year head coach was pleased with the overall team effort Saturday concluding, “It was a good win against a tough team!”
Offensively, RHS found the net just over 10 minutes into the game thanks to a Blake Gantenbein rebound score that came just after the ball had ricocheted off of the right post. The Wolverines carried that one-nil lead into the second half.
At the 24:30 mark of the second, the Wolverines received a perfectly executed corner kick with Hunter Saltsgaver setting up a Jackson Larsen header.
Gilbert Roden’s noggin also helped big red with about 8 minutes remaining in the game. A ball bounced off of the cross-bar and was directed into the net by Gilbert’s head, putting the Wolverines up 3-0. RHS junior Hunter Saltsgaver was credited with all three assists in the victory.
Riverton is back on the road Tuesday, going to Evanston. They’ll be at Rock Spring on April 24th and back home April 26th against Green River.
The Riverton girls also had a shutout win versus Star Valley.
