(Cheyenne, WY) – The Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation recently announced that it has launched an investigation into the suspicious object that was discovered outside the Wyoming State Capitol on Tuesday, Oct. 21.
A release from Wyoming DCI states that the object was initially described as an improvised explosive device. It led to the evacuation of the Capitol building at approximately 9:45 a.m. after Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers were made aware of its presence.
The WHP requested that Wyoming DCI lead the investigation, which also included collaboration between several law enforcement agencies, including the Laramie County Sheriff’s Office, the Cheyenne Police Department, the Joint EOD Team, Cheyenne Fire Rescue, AMR, the FBI, the ATF and the Department of Homeland Security.
Following a sweep, the Capitol was confirmed safe and was subsequently reopened.
“The suspicious object has since been rendered safe and analyzed by the Joint EOD
Team and the FBI. While further laboratory testing is pending, initial findings suggest the
object is likely a deconstructed live firework munition with a fuse,” the release states. “DCI has begun reviewing a significant amount of video evidence and has identified two
subjects of interest. Efforts to identify these individuals are underway with the
assistance of law enforcement partners.”
DCI is urging residents with any information, images or recordings of suspicious activity during the early-morning hours of Oct. 21 to come forward. Investigators are especially interested in activity between 4 and 8 a.m. Oct. 21.
