(Dubois, WY) – The Fremont County School District 2 Board of Trustees provided an update Tuesday on its search for a new superintendent, reporting early interest in the position and outlining the anticipated hiring timeline.
The superintendent position has now been posted and will remain open through March 27, Board Chair Tracy Nguyen said during this week’s meeting.
As of Monday, Nguyen said the district had received five applications, with additional recruitment efforts ongoing.
“We continue to receive a high level of interest in the position,” Nguyen said, noting that the district is working in partnership with the Wyoming School Boards Association “to support and guide this search process.”
Once the application period closes, Nguyen said the board will meet to review candidates and select finalists for in-person interviews.
Those interviews would likely be scheduled across multiple days, she said, with opportunities for staff and community stakeholders to meet the finalists.
‘Alternative options’
Nguyen also indicated that the school board is open to considering “different alternatives from a superintendent and building admin standpoint” – referencing suggestions from Trustee Leah Vermeire as well as longtime Dubois educator Rosie Graff, who spoke during the public comment portion of this week’s meeting.
During her time at the podium, Graff encouraged the board to reconsider its approach to the superintendent search, citing concerns about frequent leadership turnover in the district.
“We (seem to) go through superintendents at a pretty rapid rate,” Graff said. “I don’t know the answer, but (we’ve got) nothing to lose by looking at other options than just hiring another superintendent. … I don’t think it’s working for Dubois.”
Instead, she proposed forming a committee to investigate different approaches.
“(Let’s) reconsider what we’re doing now,” she said. “Let’s do something different.”
Nguyen thanked Graff for her comments, calling the superintendent search “something that is urgent and top of mind and a top priority for the school board.”
“The board does remain committed to ensuring that we identify the best candidate, whether that be the traditional path or an alternative path,” Nguyen said later in the meeting. “We take this process very seriously, and we want to make sure that we set the district up for success and stability and a smooth transition.”
