(Riverton, WY) – The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) has shared an update today, December 26, regarding the December 15 stabbing in Riverton that resulted in the death of a male subject.
At the time, the Riverton Police Department issued a press release on December 16 informing that detectives were “investigating the death of a male located inside a residence at the corner of Riverview and South Major Ave. late Sunday evening” after they received a call reporting “a disturbance inside the home.”
Once on-scene, officers learned that “a disturbance had occurred and the male was allegedly stabbed,” the release also informed.
When County 10 reached out to the RPD for a follow-up earlier this week, Chief Eric Hurtado informed that the area where the incident took place “is a checker-board of City and County lots,” and that the incident was “determined to have taken place in County’s jurisdiction.”
“We will be working with Fremont County Sheriff’s Office,” Chief Hurtado told County 10. “They will be taking the lead (in) this investigation.”
When County 10 reached out to FCSO Undersheriff Mike Hutchison, he shared that a statement was being prepared to be released today, December 26, which ultimately came out late this afternoon and confirmed what Chief Hurtado shared.
“At the time of the initial report, the Riverton Police Department began an investigation but later realized the address is not within the city limits of Riverton,” today’s release states. “The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office was notified and provided all of (the) preliminary information that the Riverton Police Department had gathered.”
“The Fremont County Coroner’s Office and the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office are continuing to investigate the circumstances leading to and surrounding the man’s death,” the release continues. “All parties involved have been identified and interviews have been conducted.”
The release goes on to state that there is “no danger to the public,” and that as the investigation continues, “the evidence must be carefully examined and considered to determine if any criminal activity on the part of others contributed to the man’s death.”
“Investigators must exercise due diligence in the investigation. When the investigations of both the Sheriff’s Office and the Fremont County Coroner’s Office have been completed, the Fremont County Attorney’s Office will make a final determination as to whether or not any criminal charges are warranted.”
“No further information will be released at this time,” the release concludes.
