(Fremont County, WY) – A grass fire grew to just under 22 acres five miles west of Jeffrey City on Saturday, April 5, according to updates from Fremont County Fire Protection District Chief Ron Wempen and the Watch Duty fire app.
Dubbed the “Ice Slough Fire” due to its proximity to the historical marker off of U.S. Highway 287 / Wyoming 789, the blaze took about 4.5 hours to contain, according to Chief Wempen.
The FCFPD assisted the Jeffrey City Fire District, including “five engines with crews from Batallion 3 Lander Rural, and four engines with crews from Batallion 1 Central (Riverton station).”
The fire took place on mostly private land, with portions stretching to BLM land. Chief Wempen shared that BLM Fire took over the scene for monitoring after the fire was contained.
The exact cause of the fire is not known at this time.
