(Casper, WY) – The Fall State Special Olympics were held in Casper on October 8–10, where each of the athletes on the Fort Washakie team medaled.
Coach Michele Thompson shared that this is the team’s second year competing in bocce ball after they came to the conclusion that bowling practices were getting too difficult to schedule.
“The new sport has been a fantastic fit for our team,” said Thompson. “The game offers more flexible practice opportunities, a quieter environment, and a great balance of focus and friendly competition. Our athletes have taken the game seriously and shown incredible enthusiasm and sportsmanship. At State, it felt more like a master golf match. That’s how serious they are about their game.”
Bocce Ball is similar to lawn bowling, Thompson explained.
“The goal is to roll your ball closest to the small white target ball, called the pallina. Players earn points by getting their ball closest to the pallina. ‘Kissing’ the pallina is particularly exciting and earns 2 points when your ball touches but doesn’t move the pallina. Players play until 12 points.”
This season is Thompson’s first year coaching, with support from Coach Mike Enos, who is now in his second year leading the team. Thompson shouted out volunteers Gela Capanna, former coach, and Deb and Tim Robinson for their help.
This year’s athletes (by division) included:
- Patience Engavo – Silver
- Olivia DuShane – Bronze
- Kaylynn Yellowplume – Silver
- Quincy Robinson – Gold
- Joey Hill – Bronze
“We are so proud of their effort and teamwork,” Thompson said. “Quincy says all the time, ‘It’s about having fun.'”
