(Lander, WY) – At the March 4 Fremont County Commissioner’s meeting, Fremont County and Prosecuting Attorney Patrick LeBrun officially announced his resignation from the position, effective April 1, 2025.
LeBrun, who is a Wyoming native and graduate of both the University of Wyoming College of Arts and Sciences and the University of Wyoming College of Law, later told County 10 that his resignation will “be effective basically at 11:59, March 31,” at which point the process will begin for the appointment of a new County Attorney. “They’ll have to start looking for a replacement April 1st.”
As for that process, LeBrun explained that once the office becomes vacant, the Fremont County Republican Party will have a caucus meeting, where they will interview lawyers who have expressed an interest in the job.
“Typically, they will vote, and the top three candidates will be presented. They will then turn around and send a letter to the Fremont County Commissioners identifying the three individuals that they have nominated.”
“The Fremont County Commission will then interview those nominees and choose who will finish this term,” LeBrun continued, which will conclude in December 2026.
“So it will ultimately be left up to the Commissioners after those three are chosen by the Republican Party, because it is a Republican-held office.”
As for qualifications, LeBrun said that each candidate has to be a licensed attorney in Wyoming, a member of the Wyoming Bar, and a resident/registered voter in Fremont County at the time they are officially appointed.
LeBrun added that he notified the Fremont County Republican Party of his resignation, and now they will “start spreading the word.”
“I suspect that they will set a meeting of the Republicans sometime, not too long after the 1st of April, to interview candidates.”
As for what’s next for LeBrun, who assumed office on January 5, 2015, he shared with County 10 that he has accepted a position in another community and will be moving, but wants to keep specific details about the next chapter in his life private.
“I want to say that, you know, the timing is right for my family and I,” LeBrun explained. “I’ve been the County Attorney for ten years, and I’ve loved every minute of it. But it’s become time for me to move on and another County Attorney to step in and take the reins.”
County 10 asked LeBrun if there were any achievements during his career that he was especially proud of. While he said there were “a bunch,” he was particularly honored to be a part of the process that led to the identification and charging of the parties involved in the murders of Jocelyn Watt and Rudy Perez back in 2019, and the eventual prosecution of those parties.
“Getting invited to a meeting at the local office of the DCI and being informed that Jocelyn and Rudy’s murders had been solved, that was, probably the highlight of my career,” LeBrun commented. “You know, there have obviously been some terrible crimes in Fremont County, but that one remained unsolved for so long and (we) had a real concern that it wouldn’t be solved; but then they did.”
LeBrun then wanted to give “special acknowledgment” to the following agencies “for being great to work with all of these years”: the Riverton Police Department, the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, the Wyoming Highway Patrol, the Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigation, the Lander Police Department, the Dubois Poilce Department, the Shoshoni Police Department, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs Law Enforcement.
“I will cherish and appreciate the relationship that I had with all of those agencies.”
“It’s been the greatest job of my life. I can’t imagine that I’ll ever have a better job. I’m very thankful that I was given the opportunity to do this job for so long. I don’t regret one second of it. And I just want to thank Fremont County for giving me this opportunity.”
