(Fremont County, WY) – On February 25 and 26, two separate grass fires were reported in Fremont County, one occurring on Coalmine Road in the Lander area, and the other on Bryant Road in the Riverton area.
“Wet conditions are gone, and vegetation is burning rapidly again, especially with the windy conditions,” Fremont County Fire Protection District Chief Ron Wempen shared with County 10.
The FCFPD has since issued the following releases with details about each fire.
Coalmine Road Fire
On February 25, 2026, at approximately 2:50 PM, Fremont County Fire Protection District units were dispatched to the 90 block of Coalmine Road in Lander for a reported grass fire.
Units from Battalion 1 (Central Fire), Battalion 10 (Hudson Fire), and Battalion 3 (Lander Rural Fire) responded to the scene. Upon arrival, crews observed a small grass fire approximately 1/10 of an acre in size.
Fire personnel quickly initiated suppression efforts and were able to contain and control the fire, preventing further spread.
The fire was determined to have been caused by welding activities. No structures were threatened, and no injuries were reported.
Bryant Road Fire
Units from Central Fire (Battalion 1) responded to a mutual aid request from the Riverton Fire District for a reported grass fire in the area of Bryant Road.
Upon arrival, crews assisted Riverton Fire personnel with fire suppression efforts and worked to contain and control the spread of the fire. Through coordinated efforts between agencies, the fire was brought under control in a timely manner.

No injuries were reported at this time. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
