(Lander, WY) – The 2024 Veterans Day assembly at LVHS was held yesterday, November 11, and once again packed the field house gym with those looking to honor our Veterans.
Student Council President Finn Gebhart MC’d the ceremony, which began with the presentation of colors from the school’s FFA and Military Science groups, followed by a performance of the National Anthem from the LVHS Valley Singers.
Following recognitions of each military branch, speakers included Kadence Kummer, FFA President; Lindy Linn, Field Representative for Senator Cynthia Lummis; and Micah Morgan, Student Council Representative.
Each year at the LVHS Veterans Day assembly, a local Veteran is honored, and a mayoral proclamation is made declaring that year’s Veterans Day as an official honor to that specific Veteran. This year’s honored Veteran was Jospeh Nemick, who was introduced by Student Council Vice President Lizzie Whiting and Mayor Monte Richardson.
The day’s final speaker was Governor Mark Gordon, who opened with the following words.
“In times of trouble not before, God and soldier we adore, in times of peace with all things righted, here in Wyoming our Veterans will never be slighted. I want to apologize to Rudyard Kipling, whose verse I changed a little bit, but it’s because Wyoming has such a strong history and memory.”
Governor Gordon then spoke about the history of Veterans Day and its origins as Armistice Day, before reading a proclamation honoring November 11, 2024 as the 70th official Veterans Day.
“Finally, I urge you to think of the 2-300th, which we deployed from this very gym on July 30,” Governor Gordon concluded in reference to the Bravo Battery of the 2-300th Field Artillery Regiment from the Wyoming Army National Guard that deployed this summer. “Please keep them in your prayers. And may the folks in this room be able to say to our dear Veterans, thank you; we have the watch. God bless them.”
The assembly concluded with with Darwin and Noah St. Clair performing an Honor Song, a rendition of “The Road Home” by the LVHS choir, and Connor Corccoran and James Butler performing taps while local Veteran Wade Mitchell sounded the cannon fire.
