(Riverton, WY) – It was reported last week that 24-year-old Arapahoe man Lincey Shongutsie was arrested for Aggravated Assault, after he reportedly struck another man in the head with a double-bladed ax in Riverton City Park.
Shongutsie’s initial appearance hearing took place today at 1:30 PM in the Riverton Circuit Court.
Court documents filed on June 21 and made available in the public digital registry on June 24 state that Shongutsie faces two Counts of Aggravated Assault and Battery.
The information affidavit states that on June 20, around 3:50 PM, the Riverton Police Department (RPD) received reports of an ax assault in City Park.
Upon arriving at the scene, RPD observed two women holding a t-shirt to the head of the victim, who was later determined to be Shongutsie’s brother.
The victim was “bleeding profusely” from the head, Court documents later stated.
According to those on scene, Shongutsie had been drinking at a picnic table in the park with the victim and one of the females, who informed RPD that the victim/Shongutie’s relative had passed away that morning in Casper.
The female told RPD that Lincey had also reportedly called the victim earlier that day and said “something to the effect of, “You’re going to be taken to the dark side today.””
RPD was then informed that Shongutsie “became enraged” after the victim reportedly called him a “b****,” at which point he walked to the vehicle he was using at the time (later determined to belong to someone else) and retrieved an ax.
Shongutsie reportedly said “I’ll show you b****” as he was retrieving the ax, and then proceeded to swing it one time at the victim, striking him in the head.
Lincey then drove away with the ax in the vehicle while others began helping the victim, who was later transported to the hospital after RPD and EMS showed up.
(It was also noted in the affidavit that the females on scene stayed to hold the t-shirt to the victim’s bleeding head while they awaited EMS.)
RPD was later able to obtain video recording of the incident, which confirmed the assault and indicated that the victim “did not engage in the altercation and remained seated at the picnic table.”
The maximum sentence for an Aggravated Assault and Battery felony charge is 10 years imprisonment.
Shongutsie’s initial appearance hearing was held today at 1:30 PM. County 10 was not able to attend this hearing, but will share updates when further information becomes available, which can be viewed here.
