(Lander, WY) – The annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony, organized by the American Legion Post #33, VFW Post #954, the City of Lander and Fremont County, took place at the Lander Fire Hall once again this year for the 2024 service, with around 200 attendees who honored and memorialized those whose lives were lost in the terrorist attacks 23 years ago.
In an effort to simulate the responders call to action on September 11, 2001, the ceremony began with a live page that summoned the local fire departments, emergency responders and the Lander Police Department to the scene of the memorial.
As this occurred, a flyover was conducted by Guardian Flight and Classic Air Medical helicopters.
Following the flyover and first responder page, the Lander Pipe Band performed while the colors were posted, and the Lander Valley High School Valley Singers then sang the National Anthem.
Speakers at this year’s ceremony included: Lander Mayor Monte Richardson, who thanked the local responders for their tireless efforts to keep citizens safe; Lori Crump, who conducted the opening and closing prayers; and Representative Lloyd Larsen, who shared the history of the terrorists attacks and the horrendous toll it took on the lives of American citizens and first responders.
After a moment of silence to honor the fallen, the memorial concluded with the Pipe Band playing “Amazing Grace,” followed by the rifle salute and a performance of “Taps.”
