(Lander, WY) – The Lander Lady Tigers volleyball team hung on for a dramatic win over their visiting rival Riverton Lady Wolverines Thursday.
Lander got off to a quick start going up 2-1 sets, but Riverton found a spark in the fourth and forced a fifth set. The fifth set saw back-and-forth lead changes until the very end, when the Tigers went up 13-12 and never looked back.
“I love a good rivalry match and beating Riverton is always nice,” said Lander head coach Shannon Waggoner. “This win is just a small step toward the team’s big goal and I’m hoping we can build on it… This is an amazing group of girls. They work hard for each other and stay positive through the growing pains of the season.”
At 14-12, Lander senior Ava Gerlach eyed a high set ball and spiked it over the net for the game point. Matching the dramatic finish’s energy, Lander’s student section rushed the court to celebrate with the team as the rivalry trophy was presented to the Lady Tigers. The girls sit atop the 3A Southwest division as they look forward to earning a spot in the state tournament in early November.
