Sunday, May 5th will be known in Fremont County as Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Day.
In April, Riverton Mayor Rich Gard signed a proclamation announcing that the City of Riverton will be observing the day and helping to spread awareness about the issues that many Native American women face.
This week, Lander Mayor Monte Richardson also signed the proclamation.
According to the proclamation, Native American women are 2.5 times more likely to experience sexual assault than most other races, and that 1 in 3 Native American women have reported that they’ve been sexually assaulted in their lifetime.
A variety of community events are happening on behalf of the awareness and prevention efforts this weekend. On Saturday, the CWC’s United Tribes Club hosts their annual pow-wow at Central Wyoming College’s Rustler Gymnasium. The event is dedicated to missing and murdered indigenous women.
On Sunday, a rally and pow-wow will be held at Riverton City Park beginning at 12:30 p.m.
