It should go without saying but it keeps happening so here we go; do not open fire hydrants.
There have been multiple reports of fire hydrants opened in Riverton over the past few months. Public Works Director Kyle Butterfield noted rivers and lakes are low right now making water a precious commodity.
The red hydrants are capable of pumping out up to 500 gallons of water per minute. That is a lot of wasted water for a community. The pressure changes from opening hydrants can also cause water pipe damage and often leads to water discoloration. No one wants to drink reddish-brown water.
