(Riverton, WY) – 72-year-old Jackie Lucas has been the highway contract driver for 17 Mile and the Arapahoe area for 35+ years and retired on Friday, August 30.
County 10 caught up with Jackie, who shared that the Lucas family has actually delivered mail to that area even longer.
“I worked with my mother-in-law. She had it,” Jackie explained about the route. “The Lucas family has delivered over 40 some years out there.”
Her mother-in-law was Wanda Lucas.
Jackie shared what she will miss the most.
“My people. I have met so many nice people. They’ve been so nice, so caring, and just very understanding. They hate to see me go, but it’s time.”
Now that she has retired, she plans to spend a little extra time at home.
“We have a farm and a ranch, so I will be able to put more time in and go out, round up, and do the things that I haven’t been able to do. So that will be good.”
The new driver started today, September 3.
“I’m going to miss everybody, and we have a new driver, and she’ll take care of them,” Jackie shared. “So, you know, you just miss your people and the family and your post office are your second family. You see them every day. You’re part of their lives. You just get to know people and to say goodbye to them because, other than seeing them at the store or something, you won’t see them.”
