(Hot Springs County, WY) – The Red Canyon Fire in Hot Springs County has grown to 68,450 acres and is at 0% containment, according to the latest update shared Saturday evening, and a new evacuation order is also in effect.
“The evacuation area is south of Buffalo Creek Road, east of Jones Creek Road, and west of Reck Road from the fire area to the Fremont county line,” the update states. “This includes all of Kirby Creek, Lake Creek, Bridger Creek, and the Pack Saddle area. Kirby Creek Road between Red Hole Road and Buffalo Creek Road was previously evacuated.”

The fire is “exhibiting extreme fire behavior and has crossed several potential hold points, including the 172 Road,” the update informs. “The fire is growing in several directions, approaching the Washakie County line on the north side of the fire as well as the Fremont County line on the south side of the fire.”
The updates adds that “high temperatures, high outflow winds, and poor overnight humidity recovery are leading to active fire behavior overnight and substantial fire growth.”

“Several property owners in the fire area have taken independent actions to protect their property and/or to help firefighting efforts. Many of these independent actions continue to impede firefighting operations. If non-firefighting personnel are in an area where operations are planned or are being conducted, operations are negatively impacted because firefighting resources’ attention is diverted from firefighting to focus on life-safety of the public. Anyone working independently is asked to coordinate efforts with the incident management team or to stop working in the fire management area.“
