Laura Koch and Shelby Cress from the Lander Art Center stopped by Coffee Time in February to chat with Vincent Tropea about what’s buzzing in the studio.
It was Shelby’s first time at Coffee Time, as the newest gallery representative at Lander Art Center. Cress graduated in May from Central Wyoming College as a photography major and has worked as a gallery assistant at Lander Art Center since the summer.
SHELBY: You can come and find me at our front desk, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays. And anytime that you guys need any help with anything going on in your art world, just pop in and we’ll be there to help you out!
This year’s Lander Art Center schedule is very ambitious, with four art shows and a student art show, all in a row. “Impressions of Lander” begins March 7th at 6 p.m. with an Opening Gala. The ceramics show features pottery and clay works that give you the feeling of Lander.
A photography-based exhibit will debut in April called “Lander through the Lens” that captures the beauty of Lander. Artists are encouraged to submit up to three pieces per show, showcasing their current passions and styles. The deadline for submission is Friday, March 28, 2025. The opening reception for “Lander through the Lens” is on Friday, April 11, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
SHELBY: This is our first ever photography-only show at Lander Art Center, so we’re waiving all of the fees for entry and submission. So whether you’re a professional photographer or someone who’s just capturing the beauty of the landscapes on your iPhone, we want to see Lander through your eyes.
LAURA: It’s about the joy of photography and all the fun images that we see around town. I know there’s some really outstanding photographs. Some folks here in Lander have long standing reputations as photographers, so it’s a real opportunity for the photography community to get together and have an opening and get to know each other and get to socialize a little bit.

There are also 12-week classes, like “The Art of Watercolor with Lander Burton,” and the “Sun Catcher Mosaic Workshop” that still have spaces available. One class added recently was a Thursday after-school art program to handle demand from the regular Art After School program.
LAURA: We had so many kids in our class on Wednesday for Art After School that we felt bad that the parents were wait-listing their kids on Wednesday, hoping somebody else’s kids would drop out. So we added a Thursday class for that age group. We’re just providing it so that the children in Lander have an opportunity to come in and make art. Our Art After School teacher, Pamela Sipe, really tries to put a full program together for the kids.
