Mental Health Monday: Fremont Counseling Services Safe Shoot suicide prevention event aims to foster partnership with gun community

(Lander, WY) – The Today in the 10 Mental Health Monday segment, which is hosted by Vince Tropea and airs on KOVE 1330 AM / 107.7 FM, returned today with guests Scott Hayes and Becky Parker.

Hayes and Parker serve as the Executive Director and Clinical Director for Fremont Counseling Services, and they stopped by to discuss the inaugural Safe Shoot suicide prevention fundraiser event coming up on September 7.

Hayes and Parker explain that the goal of the event, which will be held at the Shoshoni Shooting Range from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM, is promoting the safe handling, storage, and use of firearms, while also fostering a partnership with the gun-owning community and raising funds for “suicide prevention efforts and uncompensated care for individuals in crisis.”

Hayes and Parker shared that 100% of the reported suicides this year were males with firearms, and considering that the high rates of gun ownership in our state/county, they felt something needed to be done to bring awareness to the issue while also recognizing resident’s right to own those firearms.

The main goal of Mental Health Monday is to start an open dialogue about a number of mental health topics, and how folks are being affected on local, state and national levels.

Guests range from psychiatrists, psychologists, school/drug/grief counselors, and any other professionals in the field, as well as testimonials from those affected by mental health issues, such as students, veterans, first responders, and many more.
