(Riverton, WY) – The MMIP (Missing, Murdered and Indigenous Person) Wind River group recently received the official check for $3,000 from the City of Riverton, which will go toward MMIP flags that will be displayed on Riverton’s Main Street.
Nicole Wagon, MMIP Wind River Chairperson, received the check from Riverton City Administrator Kyle Butterfield this week on behalf of the Riverton City Council.
The flags, which will be displayed in an effort to bring more awareness to the MMIP cause, have been in development since the 2024 MMIP “Red Day” March back in May of this year, when Riverton Police Department (RPD) Chief Eric Hurtado made the promise to see that the effort would come to fruition.
“Nicole, we will have those flags next year,” Chief Hurtado stated at the March to many cheers from the crowd at the time.
The service agreement was approved at the July 3 Riverton City Council meeting.
At that meeting, Wagon gave thank you cards to Mayor Tim Hancock, the City of Riverton Staff, Chief Hurtado and the RPD Staff, and told those in attendance that “if we can work together to stop the violence, say no more, make our community safe again then we are giving hope to many (by) saving lives.”
“This gives us inspiration to keep moving forward for all our indigenous MMIP victims and families across the country,” Wagon also stated at the meeting. “We need to work together to make it safer for our future generations.”
Wagon shared with County 10 that the flags are about to be in the graphic design phase, and she will have a better idea of when they will be raised on Main Street following that process.
