(Wind River Reservation, WY) – On Saturday, August 7th, the Northern Arapaho Tribe will remember and honor loved ones lost to the pandemic as part of a Wind River COVID-19 Memorial Run/Walk, the Northern Arapaho Business Council shared in a press release.
“Like much of Indian Country, the Wind River Reservation was disproportionately impacted by the virus, which continues to pose a threat to the Arapaho people,” the release continued.
“COVID-19 has impacted all aspects of Tribal life and touched nearly every family in our community,” said Northern Arapaho Business Council Chairman Jordan Dresser. “This memorial run is an opportunity to remember and honor those loved ones that we’ve lost to this terrible virus.”
Originally planned as an in-person event, the memorial run/walk has been transitioned to a virtual activity due to the increased local spread of a new “delta” variant of COVID-19.
Participants will engage individually in either a 5k or 10k run, or a 1-mile walk, and may complete the event at any point on Saturday.
Participants can document their completion of the event by taking either a picture of their final pedometer step count or a selfie during the run/walk, and emailing it to elizabeth.lebeaux@windrivercares.com or annette.shakespeare@windrivercares.com.
Additionally, on Friday evening, teepees in the Ethete, Arapahoe and Fort Washakie areas will be lit in blue to honor Tribal loved ones who lost their battle with COVID-19.
