(Fremont County, WY) – The National Weather Service in Riverton has issued a Fire Weather Watch for Fremont County and much of central Wyoming, in effect from Wednesday afternoon, March 18, through Saturday evening, March 21. While the Watch begins on Wednesday, the NWSR has shared that the fire weather conditions will begin today, March 17, particularly with high winds.
Low humidities (10-15%), unseasonably warm temperatures (highs in the 70s on Wednesday, lows in 70s to around 80 Thursday through Saturday), and strong gusty winds (blowing from the west at 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph; the strongest wind is expected on Wednesday and Saturday) could cause erratic fire behavior.
The NWSr advises that folks listen for later forecasts and possible Red Flag Warnings in the coming days.
Chief Ron Wempen with the Fremont County Fire Protection District shared with County 10 that “the small taste of winter over the weekend did very little to help us out” in terms of moisture, so dry conditions will also add to the fire weather risk.
